Frequently Asked Questions

Some Common Questions Clients Have Before Starting Therapy

How often do we have to meet?

Treatment typically starts with meeting 1x/week for a 50 minute session. Once you start to feel better, more in control, less emotionally reactive, we’ll discuss what frequency is best for you.

How long does therapy last?

It’s one of those answers…it depends! Some clients may have a very specific issue to work on so after a couple of months they’re experiencing enough relief to pause therapy. Others may find that they really want to work through the core issues that have been holding them back for years or decades and are fully committed to meeting for as long as is necessary. Just remember, you are in control and you will decide what is best for you.

What happens during our first session?

The first session is an intake appointment where you can share what is bringing you to therapy and what you hope will be different when you’re done. You’ll also get an opportunity to share about significant childhood/adolescent experiences and family dynamics that may have influenced how you show up in relationships, how you view yourself and how you view the world in general.

How much do sessions cost? Do you accept insurance?

Sessions are $160 for 50 mins. When you complete the intake forms, you’ll be able to save a card on file that will get charged overnight after sessions.

Aetna and United are accepted. Superbills can be provided if I am out of network for you.

How will I know if therapy is working?

You may start to notice that you’re setting boundaries with others, are more willing to say “no.” You may be listening to your intuition more instead of making decisions based on how others expect you to be. You may feel less reactive and more able to pause before reacting.

Overall, you’ll start to notice some shifts, whether large or small, with how you view situations that had typically been problematic and how you choose to respond to them.

Do you work with couples, kids, or teenagers?

No, I only provide individual counseling to adults (18+). This can be confusing since my license is as a marriage and family therapist, however, I prefer to meet with clients individually at this time.

How will I know if we’re a good fit?

I aim to be present, curious, non-judgmental, and validating in every session. However, I will still not be a good fit for everyone for various reasons and that’s okay.

If you feel listened to, that we’re moving at a pace that works for you, and that you can share about difficult experiences, then it’s probably a sign that we’re a good fit. But in the end, trust your gut and go with what feels right for you!

What is EMDR and is it right for me?

EMDR is an approach that can be helpful with working through traumatic memories and upsetting experiences that are causing distress and have led you to have negative beliefs about yourself. It is an evidence-based, structured protocol that allows you to consider different perspectives on the upsetting or traumatic experience so that there is less emotional pain when recalling the event and a shift in the beliefs you have about yourself.
